Online check-in: what to do and when
Online check-in can make departure easier. Your airline still sets the opening window, document checks and airport deadlines.

The quick answer
Use the operating airline's official check-in service with your booking reference and surname. Follow its instructions, save your boarding pass if issued, and still meet bag-drop and gate deadlines.
Start with the airline operating your first flight
Look for the words 'operated by' on your itinerary. The airline whose name appears most prominently on the booking may be selling a flight operated by a partner. Follow the operating airline's directions for check-in, or ask your booking adviser if the correct route is unclear.
Our airline help directory provides official check-in links. Keep your surname, airline booking reference and travel document beside you before starting. Enter the passenger details carefully rather than relying on a browser's saved information.
Check the opening time for your flight
There is no universal online check-in window. British Airways normally opens online check-in 24 hours before departure, while Emirates normally opens 48 hours before; airport and itinerary exceptions apply. Check the airline's current page for your booking.
Set a reminder for the relevant window. If the service is not open yet, an error message does not by itself mean that your ticket is invalid. Check the date and departure time before trying again.
Follow the result shown on screen
Select the correct passengers and complete any requested travel-document details. If a boarding pass is available, save it somewhere accessible without mobile data. If the airline asks you to collect it at the airport or have documents checked, follow those instructions.
A booking confirmation is not a boarding pass. If your phone is your main travel wallet, check its charge before leaving home and keep a sensible backup of essential journey information.
Leave time for what remains at the airport
Online check-in does not remove security, document checks or the need to drop a checked bag. Plan around the airline's recommended arrival time, then its check-in, bag-drop and boarding deadlines. These are different stages; the departure time is not the time to arrive at the gate.
If check-in repeatedly fails, note the message and contact the airline. For a Travelcart booking, our team can help identify your reference and the appropriate next step. Do not wait until a deadline has passed to raise a problem.
Your checklist
- Operating airline identified
- Correct check-in window checked
- Passenger and document details ready
- Boarding pass or airport instructions saved
Questions and answers
Can I check in online after booking through a travel agent?
Often yes, using the airline reference and surname. Some airlines or itineraries require additional verification; follow the airline's instructions.
Do I need a printed boarding pass?
It depends on the airline and airport. Use the format the airline accepts for your journey and follow any instruction to collect a pass at a desk.
Can I arrive later if I have checked in online?
Follow the airline's recommended arrival time. You may still need baggage, security or document checks, and the gate closes before departure.
