Baggage allowance without the guesswork

The airline name is only the start. Your ticket, route and fare determine which bags are included.

The quick answer

Check the allowance on your own booking for every passenger and flight. Confirm the number of bags, size and weight; a cabin-bag allowance does not automatically include a checked suitcase.

Separate the three bag questions

Make a small packing list before comparing flights. Start with the bag you want at your feet, then any larger cabin bag, then the suitcase you want checked into the hold. Ask which are included instead of simply asking whether the flight has luggage.

Airlines use different names for fares and bags. British Airways, for example, has fares without a checked bag and directs passengers to its baggage calculator or booking details. Use the official information for your airline and exact itinerary.

Read pieces, weight and dimensions together

A piece allowance and a total weight allowance are different ways of describing baggage. Do not assume that two passengers can combine their allowance or that an extra-heavy suitcase can replace two permitted bags. The relevant airline conditions decide.

Measure your case as the airline instructs, including any wheels or handles where required. Weigh it packed, with room for anything you expect to bring home. Check the return journey too, particularly if another airline operates it.

Ask early about things outside an ordinary suitcase

Pushchairs, sports equipment, musical instruments and mobility aids may have separate conditions. Tell your adviser exactly what you plan to take before choosing the fare. Keep the item's measurements and any manufacturer information handy.

Keep essential documents somewhere you can access easily. For power banks, batteries, medicines and other restricted items, follow the airline's current safety guidance and the airport's screening rules. Paying for more baggage does not make a restricted item acceptable.

Get the extra-bag price before you commit

If you need more bags, compare the flight with that allowance included against adding it separately. Ask what the extra charge covers: one direction, one passenger or the whole booking. Request confirmation rather than relying on an old screenshot or another traveller's allowance.

Our airline help directory takes you to official baggage information. For a new Travelcart quote, tell us the number of checked bags you need per person from the start; that makes the first options more useful.

Your checklist

  • Each passenger's allowance checked
  • Cabin and checked bags distinguished
  • Packed bag measured and weighed
  • Extra or unusual items confirmed with the airline

Questions and answers

Do all economy tickets include checked luggage?

No. Check the specific fare. Economy cabins can contain several fare options with different inclusions.

Can we combine our family's luggage allowance?

Only if the airline's rules allow it. Check limits for each passenger and each bag rather than assuming a shared total.

Are baggage rules the same on a codeshare?

They can differ. Check the operating airline and the baggage conditions shown for your ticket, especially when the itinerary includes partner airlines.
